How did you get started in home energy efficiency?
In 1999, I became a home energy efficiency rater through the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources. I built my experience assessing thousands of homes around Louisiana, and eventually turned it into my company, Diversified Energy, which specializes in home performance, insulation, and diagnostic services.
How long have you been in the industry?
It almost feels funny to say it, but it's now been over 25 years.
What is your philosophy on home performance?
There needs to be a balance of investment, payback, and the additional, unseen benefits of making high-performance improvements to your home. It's not just about the monthly savings you see on a utility bill or spreadsheet. It's also the benefits that never show up on a balance sheet: better indoor air quality, fewer toxic products and materials, and a home that's comfortable and healthy year round.
Can I do home energy efficiency upgrades myself?
A lot of improvements are within reach for the average homeowner, but plenty of others need an industry professional. Understanding how home performance and energy efficiency actually work makes working with pros easier and gets you a much better result.

Does insulation even matter in a hot, humid climate like Louisiana?
Yes, maybe more than in cold climates. Insulation isn't just about winter heat loss. It slows heat gain in summer and helps control humidity, which is the bigger comfort problem in the Gulf South.
My AC runs constantly but the house still feels humid. What's going on?
Usually means the system is oversized or the ductwork is leaking. An oversized unit cools the air fast without running long enough to actually pull moisture out.
What's the difference between air sealing and insulation, and do I need both?
Air sealing stops uncontrolled air movement through gaps and cracks. Insulation slows heat transfer. One without the other leaves real money on the table.
Do I need a home energy audit before starting any upgrades?
Not always required, but it tells you where a house is actually losing money instead of guessing. Worth it before any big-ticket work like an HVAC replacement.
Are ductless mini-splits worth it for a Gulf South home?
Often yes, especially for additions, garage conversions, or homes with failing ductwork. They sidestep duct losses entirely.
What's a realistic payback period on solar in Louisiana?
Varies a lot with usage, incentives, and system size. Worth running the real numbers before any big investment. Efficiency work usually pays back faster and should come first.
Do I need a permit for insulation or air sealing work?
Depends on the scope and the parish. Simple attic insulation usually doesn't need one, but larger jobs might.
How do hurricanes and storm season affect home performance decisions?
Moisture intrusion after storms is a huge deal. Wet insulation and hidden mold are common problems that get missed in a quick repair.
